SYNOPSIS: Acoustics is the study of sound.
It is no denying that nowadays acoustics plays a very important role in auditorium & studio designs, noise control, sound reinforcement system, Hi– Fi system, and speech intelligibility. Yet, its first formula was developed and introduced to the world only about 100 years ago despite the fact that many opera houses had been built in Europe many decades ago.
To some people, acoustics is a new and boring subject. But, if you like sound, this talk will give you some basic knowledge concerning sound. We use our ears to listen sound. But, do not trust your ears. Air absorbs sound only at 1 kHz and above, therefore we have a lot of low frequency sound in our environment, thus affecting the speech clarity. An unconfirmed report said high noise level helps birth control, believe it or not.
This talk consists of about 100 slides and will take at least 90 minutes. At the end of the talk, some new acoustics research works and developments will be mentioned, just for information. |
